Data
in GSM
and GPRS
We reviewed the
main vocal features, now we are going to discover what's more interesting
while using this sleeve: The data part, whether in GSM
or GPRS
mode. If you want to, you may discover on this site, what GSM
and GPRS
are by clicking on these links : GSM
- GPRS.
Talking about parameters, these are the same than those you have determined
while setting the use of your Ipaq with your mobile phone through
the infrared ports. The detailed implementation of this connection
to Internet, including the subscription to Internet and its use, are
detailed in the book "Pocket PC - All its Universe" edited
by Sybex. We will show you how to set the parameters for the GPRS
when the offers of the operators will be marketed in France, or we
invite you to ask for the parameters to use to your operator.
Wetheryou are usingGSM
ou GPRS,
the use of the DATA part is exactly the same for you, once the parameters
are set. To a nuance however, that is, every time that you want to
connect to Internet to get your mails, to surf, to run your applications
in " light customer " mode, the
GSM card will connect to the network, whereas while in GPRS,
your Pocket PC is connected permanently.
To get there, use the menu that unfolds itself on the top of your
screen while pointing on one of the icons of the menu bar on the top
of your screen and selecting the option Voice Center.
You then get back to the general menu of the software of your sleeve

You
will discover the 4 sites, pre-selected for you by Microsoft.
By pointing to one the proposed links, you will access the information
page of the site. By pointing on the link to reach the site, you will
see your Pocket PC connecting automatically to the network sif it
was not already connected, whether in GSM
or GPRS.
The following notifications will appear on your screen :
To begin, the setting of the connection. What does your machine do
?
It sets up a link between the radio part of your Sleeve and the receiving
antenna of the nearest mobile network (The antenna is called a BTS,
look up the description of the GSM
and GPRS
network ).
Once it has set up the link with the antenna, a connection with the
server of your internet access service provider (ASP) is set. Within
this introduction, we will use a provider named Free (in order to
remain coherent with the book " Pocket PC - All its Universe
" which explains how to set the parameters of the Internet connection).
The parameters are the same that those described in the book.
Your ASP is going to route your request towards the Internet server
requested, upon the receipt of your request it will send back the
page asked in HTML form.
The Internet Browser (Internet Explorer) of your Pocket PC will translate
the HTML marks and rearrange them in order to submit it to you in
an usable form to a human being, which is you. |

users of Pocket PC ?
You may get there by entering the URL (this is the internet address
of the site) :
http://www.google.fr/ie

Surf
well on the Net !
You can generalize the use of your Internet browser for the access
to your mail box, either by means of the browser, or by the means
of Outlook in your Pocket PC. Wether it is those that you use on the
Net or the one of your company (if it is equipped for it, of course),
the access to the Intranet of your company, the "light customer"
application of your enterprise, either the CRM applications, the maintenance
applications, the inventory (asset managment), in brief, the access
to all applications about mobility that your enterprise has put to
your disposal to help you in your daily tasks. It is interesting to
note that these light customer applications might be used as well
on your Pocket PC, your notebook PC or your desktop PC. |
